The following memo was sent from Celi Ervesun, construction project manager for Facilities Management, to the FIU community on Feb. 2.

Construction of the multi-purpose recreation/practice fields and enhanced nature preserve is ready to begin. Construction fencing will be erected on Friday, Feb. 3, and will remain in place until project completion in August 2017. Although mostly stationary, the fencing has been designed to be moveable to allow limited access to the existing organic garden and preserve as needed. Access to the jogging path around the preserve will be limited during construction.

Upon completion of the project, two new recreation/practice fields – one natural turf and one artificial turf – will be in place and the jogging path will be extended to encompass them. In addition, a new wetlands area designed by faculty will be created south of the current preserve to provide an enhanced research and teaching resource for FIU faculty and students.

We regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your cooperation as we work to improve recreational and athletic opportunities for our students.

Why can't we have natural grass? We have the climate for it.

Is it a budget issue?

Budget can be an issue for sure. I can tell you from working in the sports industry that purchasing, installing and maintaining natural grass is not cheap. Also the Dolphins used to change their turf twice per year and that was even before the canes started playing there.

Also even a team like the Marlins who is a professional sports franchise doesn't replace their natural turf every year, even if they have multiple events and the grass is in bad shape they do their best to make it last because it is not cheap.

Also you have to account for labor cost which is probably none right now, natural grass requires a team of probably 4+ people working full time throughout the year .

Just my 2 cents.

btw i was also hoping it would be Natural Grass, but i understand we probs can't afford it right now.

I believe if it was only the FIU football team playing, the grass surface would be feasible. The practice fields being would alleviate the amount of wear grass field would take. Unfortunately reality dictates what needs to be used in my opinion. Miami FC and high school games being played around the same time frame would make it hard to maintain a clean surface.

Spot on Abominous. I think we simply have too many uses for the field to justify placing a natural grass field. As Reinier mentioned, based on the amount of use the field gets, it'd have to be re-sodded constantly which is simply too expensive.

Good thing is, I think Miami FC is mostly covering the cost of field replacement. I recall reading somewhere that that was one of the negotiated terms of the lease.

SP, thanks for the pictures! For those of us that no longer live in the 305, it's great to see images of the progress, since we can't see it in-person. Looks like it's coming along.

Can't wait to see it all done and painted up for the new season. Let's see if they do anything interesting to the field...
