FIU & TEMPLE ACCEPT INVITATIONS TO PLAY IN 2017 BAD BOY MOWERS GASPARILLA BOWL

December 3, 2017

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (December 3, 2017) – The Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl has announced that FIU (8-4, 5-3) from Conference-USA and Temple (6-6, 4-4) from the American Athletic Conference have accepted invitations to play in this year’s game.

The tenth edition of the bowl game will be played at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 8 p.m. ET and air on ESPN. Tickets for the 2017 Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl start as low as just $40 and are available for online purchase from Tickets.com.

FIU won its eighth game of the season on Saturday defeating UMass 63-45, tying the 2011 team for the most wins in an FIU season. Ironically that season also resulted in a bowl trip to St. Petersburg. The Panthers, then in the Sun Belt Conference and led by future NFL star T.Y. Hilton, was upended by Marshall 20-10.

“We’re very excited to be headed to the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl,” said FIU head coach Butch Davis. “Our guys have worked really hard this year, and I’m proud that we’ll end this season in a bowl.”

Temple, which won three of its final four games, including a season-ending 43-22 road win over Tulsa, is making its first bowl trip to St. Petersburg. First-year head coach Geoff Collins returns to familiar territory in Florida. Collins was the defensive coordinator at Florida in 2016. He served as FIU’s defensive coordinator in 2010 and was also a defensive coach for UCF in 2009 when the Knights played Rutgers in the 2009 bowl game in St. Petersburg.

“We are very excited to participate in the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl and we are certainly looking forward to spending time in St. Petersburg to see all it has to offer,” said Collins.

“It’s always great to have two teams coming to our game after closing the regular season with big, dominating wins,” said Brett Dulaney, Executive Director of the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl. “We look forward to providing FIU and Temple with a terrific bowl experience that includes fun times and rewarding community involvement programs.”

The Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl is owned-and-operated by ESPN Events, a division of ESPN.

FIU, Davis thrilled with bowl destination

Quote:
FIU’s third ever bowl game and its first since 2011 will be a homecoming for starting quarterback Alex McGough and several other Panthers.

The Panthers (8-4) announced on Sunday that they will play Temple (6-6) on December 21 in the Gasparilla Bowl at 43,000-seat Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. The game, which starts at 8 p.m., will be televised by ESPN.

FIU played in St. Petersburg and lost to Marshall in 2011 when this was known as the Beef O’Brady Bowl. But if FIU beat Temple, it would break the program record for single-season wins.

Either way, Butch Davis said he’s thrilled to go bowling in his first year coaching FIU.

Temple to play Florida International in Gasparilla Bowl

Quote:
Temple’s football team was quietly hoping to play in one of the Florida bowl games and the Owls got their wish. They learned Sunday that they will play Florida International in the Dec. 21 Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl in St. Petersburg Fla.

The game will be at Tropicana Field, home of baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays, and will be televised by ESPN.

The Owls (6-6) became bowl-eligible with a 43-22 win at Tulsa in their regular-season finale on Nov. 25. This will be the third straight year that Temple will compete in a bowl, a first for the Owls.

FIU which competes in Conference USA, has an 8-4 record.

I did some research. Temple has played really well the last four games of the season. They've really pounded some good teams. Temple probably should have the edge right now. If FIU wants to win they need to play a good, clean, solid, 60 minute game. Temple is a lot better than their 6-6 record shows.

That line sounds about right--they were pounded by both USF and UCF and beat UMass by one score. We will have to bring our A game, but I don't see this as a mismatch, by any means. They are probably a little deeper and they play a consistently better level of opponent, but nothing extraordinary. This ought to be a good game.

Article about Bryce Singleton and how he helped FIU reach a bowl game:

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/college/football/article188187904.html

Quote:
Bryce Singleton could be the future of Florida International University football.

The 8-4 FIU Panthers, who will play the 6-6 Temple Owls on Dec. 21 at the Gasparilla Bowl in St. Petersburg, are a veteran team with 19 seniors, most of them starters.

I am a HUGE Bryce Singleton fan. I agree with everything said in the article. This kid will be T.O. 2.0 by his senior season.

I'm hoping Butch can make Singleton a star at FIU. He's got great potential.
