Hi. I'm a rabid college football and Ohio State fan. Each year 9 of my friends, and I, participate in a college football pool wherein we have a draft of teams. Points are awarded for winning games, conferences and bowl games. It's great fun. Anyway, I picked FIU as one of my teams. According to my Phil Steele magazine, FIU returned 16 starters including their QB, who I understood is considered an NFL prospect.

I know FIU won 9 games last year but I've obviously noticed that they are struggling this year. I'm trying to figure out, why were they so good last year but not (so far) this year? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the board.

Just a couple of notes off the top of my head:

- O-line has regressed greatly
- Special teams has regressed
- Star wide receiver (transfer from UF) graduated
- Defense still can't stop the run

Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully FIU can get it together and pull of the upset at La. Tech. Do you think that FIU will get to 6 wins?

Oooohh I sure hope we can, although from what I've seen so far I'd say it's doubtful.

Something major would have to change and/or it will be a by product of a relatively weak strength of schedule.

It is certainly befuddling. According to Bill Connelly of ESPN, FIU had a 90% chance to get 6 wins this year, now they're down to 55% and I think that sounds optimistic, based on what I've seen. FIU isn't alone in that regard.

1. Tennessee (down 54%, from 70% to 16%)
2. South Carolina (down 41%, from 67% to 26%)
3. Stanford (down 41%, from 73% to 32%)
4. USF (down 39%, from 73% to 34%)
5. Texas State (down 39%, from 73% to 34%)
6. Purdue (down 37%, from 61% to 24%)
7. FIU (down 35%, from 90% to 55%)
8. UCLA (down 35%, from 38% to 3%)
9. Buffalo (down 29%, from 71% to 42%)
10. Vanderbilt (down 28%, from 36% to 8%)

Good question. Here's my take:

1. We lost several key players on our OL. Our new OL has been atrocious. The players haven't gelled and the coaches haven't figured out the right combination yet. Our QBs have no time to throw and our RBs have no running lanes.

2. Our starting QB--a pro prospect--got injured in the middle of the second game and hasn't played since. Our backup QB isn't a D-1 QB. He can run but can't throw the ball. That explains the loss in game 2 and the pitiful performance in game 3.

3. Tulane (the first game and loss) is better than you think. They are good and will have a good season.

It will be tough for FIU to make 6-6, IMO. Not only was WKU presumed to be a win, the team has looked shaky for the reasons already stated. We have a shot at winning three of the four remaining home games, but I don't see how FIU could possibly be favored in more than one of its remaining road games given what we have seen so far. Based on the evidence, 6-6 would be over-achieving, 5-7 more likely, 4-8 a real possibility, and even worse could happen--depending on whether or not the lads Butch up or start phoning it in.
