Interesting article, dated July 22, where it says star SS signee from Luella HS in Georgia, Julius Gaines, is "likely to put pro dreams on hold".

He has until August 15 to sign with the Boston Red Sox, if not, he will enroll at FIU and start classes on August 22. Let's see what happens..

Quote:
“It is looking like I will go to FIU,” Gaines said Friday afternoon.
Late Thursday, Gaines’ Facebook status implied that he was going to attend FIU. His status read: “bouta b n miami for 3 years.” If he decides to attend FIU, Gaines would be eligible for the professional draft in three years.

Last week, he had contract talks with the Red Sox, but said he didn’t get the offer he was hoping for. The draft signing period ends on Aug. 15.

In another article dated (today) August 2, 2011 about a fellow Luella HS senior-to be, Gaines is mentioned as still not having signed with the Red Sox organization and likely to attend FIU.

He had also received interest from Florida International, N.C. State and Middle Georgia College. Former Luella teammate Julius Gaines is expected to enroll at FIU when classes begin in a couple weeks.

Gaines was a late-round draft choice of the Boston Red Sox, becoming the first player in Luella history to get drafted, but he has yet to receive an offer he likes from the team.

Hopefully he plays. I know he wasn't as highly regarded by the scouts as Machado, but he wasn't that far behind. He could be an instant impact player at SS.

Yep. Prior to the season and his shoulder injury, several scouting services had him ranked as the #2 or #3 overall prospect player in the state of Georgia, and several thought he was either a #2 round draft choice material or maybe even late round 1 material. He had his injury and he didn't have an incredible year with the bat (although not bad at almost .400 in high school), as his summer league average was not that good.

At any rate, many scouts rate his defense at a very, very high level as a high school senior. His bat needs development, according to some of them.

Turtle will fix his bat.

Any word on the other drafted players?

Will have to check on that. Maybe Pete Pelegrin has more information on that, as I recall him writing a blog to the effect of our signees and when they were drafted...
