Coach Melendez keeps racking up All American recruits for the 2017 Class. Couple of days ago it was two left handed pitchers in Michael Perez and Elija Gill. Gill is a 6-1/185 LHP from Providence Christian HS in Jacksonville, who is rated as a PG 3rd Team All American player for 2017. Michael Perez, a 6-4 LHP from Conrad Academy in Orlando, is tabbed as a pre season Perfect Game Honorable Mention All American.

Now today, we have, as it appears in Perfect Game's database, two new commitments. Yet another top player from Puerto Rico, OF/LHP Gabriel Fernandez, has committed to FIU. He is the rated as the 7th top prospect in all of Puerto Rico (we have now committed to FIU from this class the #2, #4, #7, and #13 players from Puerto Rico) and the 4th FIU commit listed as 1st Team All American (joining MJ Melendez, Oraj Anu, and Johnathan Rodriguez). We also have on that list another Fernandez kid from Archbishop McCarthy in Broward, 6-3/195 OF Adan Fernandez, as committed to FIU. He is listed at Perfect Game as a High Honorable Mention All American player.

All 12 high school commitments so far are listed as Perfect Game's All Americans.

With these commitments, once they are added up to rankings, I expect FIU's ranking to go up from #13 (with 9 commits) to anywhere from #5 to #9 in the nation.

Looks like two more top commits for 2017 in Jan Figueroa and Jonathan Nieves have committed per Perfect Game (#5 and #9 players from Puerto Rico). Wish we had a football and basketball coach like Mervyl.

Thank you, 'Eng. Yes, Jan Figueroa is a 6-4/200 RHP from Trujillo Alto, PR. He is listed as a PG 2nd Team All American (Top 200) and rated in Puerto Rico as the overall #5 player in the island. He is rated as the second best pitcher, right behind fellow Panther commitment Wilberto Rivera who is rated #3 overall in the island. As noted by 'Eng, we also got a commitment from another top player from Puerto Rico in catcher Jonathan Nieves, who is 5-11/182 and rated by Perfect Game as Honorable Mention All American and also as the overall #9 rated player in Puerto Rico. After these latest commitments, FIU has commitments from the #2, #3, #4, #5, #7, #9, and #13 rated high school players in PR. 4 of the top 5 and 6 of the top 10 have pledged to FIU.

Perfect Game has now FIU with 21 commitments (which obviously is planning for a number of these kids going pro and/or not showing at FIU for any reason), and now goes up to #4 in recruiting overall, just below Florida, Vanderbilt, and Miami. FIU has 6 "Top 100" players, which is tied for second with Miami and USC.

That's nasty good... I don't want to get my hopes up, but those are good numbers. Of course, many will not pan out for lack of grades, going pro, or just changing their mind. But if we can get a majority of those kids to sign with us, I'm ecstatic.

With the latest commitment of 3B, SS Andres Santana, of Doral Academy Charter....a 6-2/185 player who was a 1st Team All Dade last year as a junior, and rated by perfect game as a 3rd Team All American. With this commitment and some other ones like RHP from Georgia, Steven Casey, FIU is now tied for #2 with Florida (with 157 total points) as recruiting class in the nation, surpassing UM and behind just Vanderbilt. Melendez keeps racking up commitments, now 23 up to date. Again, we know the top players won't be playing for FIU most likely, but the quality and quantity of commitments is a very, very good sign. Go Panthers!

With yet another stellar commitment for FIU's class of 2017, RHP Christian Santana from American Heritage, FIU RANKS NOW #1 as per Perfect Game.

Again, I know many of these kids won't play for FIU, but many of them will.

Greetings Golden Panthers!

As a graduate of B-CU I spent a lot of time following the baseball team and Coach Melendez. You guys have scored a major coup and I predict that within a very short period of time FIU Baseball will be nationally recognized. High moral character, family man, disciplinarian, teacher, excellent coach, great recruiter, and the respect of his peers.

I know firsthand the extremely limited resources he had at B-CU and the lack of quality depth. However, his teams always gave Florida, Miami, and other major baseball programs fits!

While many of the top guys wont play, the idea is that the average talent of the guys who will play for us will be much higher because of the talent curve.

Yet another Perfect Game All American player has committed to FIU, thus solidifying FIU's position as #1 recruiting class in the nation (that sounds amazing to type, btw). Brandon Dorsey, a 3B/1B from Riverdale Baptist HS in Mount Airy, Md just committed to FIU. He is rated as a PG 2nd Team All American player. With his commitment, FIU now has 25 of them.

FIU has now 171 points in their rating, while Vanderbilt at second place has 162, with Florida 3rd with 157 and Miami at 4th with 154.

Welcome to FIU, Brandon!

FIU Baseball landed its 26th commitment for the class of 2017 in OF/IF Joshua Crouch of Sebring, FL. Crouch is rated by Perfect Game as Honorable Mention All American as well. FIU now solidifies its position as #1 recruiting class in the nation with this latest commitment as per PG's rankings with 180 points to Florida's 165 in second place.

FIU Baseball keep pouring it in recruiting wise for 2017. Altoon Coleman, a 6-2/220 RHP from Winter Springs FL, has committed to FIU for the second time, I believe. He is a 1st Team Perfect Game All American.

His commitment should solidify FIU's position as the #1 rated class by PG for the 2017 recruiting season, with 7 Top 100 players listed. Certainly, doubt as well Coleman will ever play for FIU, as he appears headed to be an early draftee by MLB team.
