So many things wrong...first 22 signees, 2nd, if ALL the drafted players sign (not going to happen), FIU's class of 9 will immediately give them 22 players on the roster (not to mention the JUCO signees not on this list). So no, we don't have to go out and sign additional players), vanderbilt's remaining class has 7 rated players compared to 8 remaining for FIU as pointed out above (and below).

Of the non drafted players that signed with us, the highest rated per Perfect Games are (Notes are from FIUSports.com article - http://fiusports.com/news/2016/11/17/top-cats-fiu-baseball-hauls-in-no-1-signing-class-in-the-nation.aspx?path=baseball):

Brandon Dorsey (3B)- 9.5 Rating - Third baseman with great power. We believe he will solidify the lineup and be a big RBI contributor.
https://www.perfectgame.org/Players/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=376954

Joshua Crouch (OF) - 9.5 Rating - Big-time power that we expect to hit in the middle of the lineup. He is also versatile defensively. He plays the game with a very confident demeanor.
(NOTE: PG has Joshua as a JUCO signee, so he might have backed out of his commitment, which would be a shame)
https://www.perfectgame.org/Players/PlayerProfile.aspx?ID=369585

Andrew Fernandez (1B) - 8.5 Rating - First baseman/catcher with a great pedigree. Knows the game of baseball, very versatile. He could see time all over the diamond.
https://www.perfectgame.org/Players/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=349616

Jan Figueroa (RHP) - 9.5 Rating - I think he is a steal for us. Been steady over the last year and a half. He has not reached his ceiling yet. He can increase his velocity. His best baseball is ahead of him.
https://www.perfectgame.org/Players/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=395120

Elijah Gill (LHP) - 9.5 Rating - Knows how to pitch. In recruiting sometimes you have to get lucky and we did with him. He's now throwing 88-90 mph. I've seen him pitch since he was 14. He's a top of the rotation type of guy.
https://www.perfectgame.org/Players/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=367057

Everett Hurst (RHP) - 9.0 Rating - A great competitor. He throws everything with conviction. Everything that he does is 100 percent. He's a bulldog on the mound. He will give us big time innings.https://www.perfectgame.org/Players/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=374051

Johnathan Nieves (C) - 9.5 Rating - Love his bat. His bat will be one that right off the bat would bat anywhere from third to sixth in our lineup. Has power and hits the ball well to all fields. Good defensive catcher but the bat sets him apart.
https://www.perfectgame.org/Players/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=378100

If you can get 1/2 of the draftees after the 10th round, (especially the starting pitchers) then this class if going to be phenomenal. Even if none come, which wont happen, just the recruits above are excellent.

Wow, so 13 of 19 current FIU signees were drafted! Hope I'm wrong but based on past history, most likely only the three recruits drafted in the 28th round and below (Oraj Anu, Andres Santana, Jose Garcia) will forgo signing to play pro ball. Coach will need to fill out the class with several currently other unsigned high school or JUCO players as the remaining class would be way too small to cover for all the seniors and drafted juniors that will be leaving the team. You say that the remaining recruiting class would be excellent/phenomenal but the reality is the class would be no stronger than many of Turtle's previous classes over the years. Not saying there is anything wrong with that, and it still should be one of the best classes in CUSA and maybe top 40 nationally but would still be a major disappointment for what was the No. 1 class nationally.

What makes things worse, if you consider the other programs rated near the top of the recruiting rankings with FIU (Vanderbilt for example), their top-ranked signees were generally drafted much lower than FIU's and in many cases not even drafted. It's almost as if MLB teams expected those players would be tougher to sign so selected them much later with the expectation they would go to school.

We'll just have to wait and see. I'm hoping to be surprised.

I think we all knew this would happen, but now it's official.

According to Baseball America, "The Giants have reached an agreement to sign first round pick Heliot Ramos. Ramos will receive a signing bonus of $3,101,700, which is slot for the 19th overall pick. Ramos was the No. 30 prospect in the BA 500".

Good luck in the Giants organization Heliot!

I think any one in the top 10 would be hard pressed to not accept the offer. Wouldn't count on any of them.

Baseball America had a write up on how the draft would impact some schools. According to BA....

Florida International: In coach Mervyl Melendez’s first year at FIU, the Panthers put together an enormous recruiting class, heavy on prep players from Florida and Puerto Rico. The banner class inevitably got picked over, with four signees drafted in the top 10 rounds. But FIU will still have a bevy of impactful players come to school, such as Florida prep lefthander Joseph Sanchez and Florida prep outfielder Andres Santana (No. 411).

Congrats Justin and good luck with the Nats.

The one guy that I'm hoping does not sign is Logan Allen. With all of our pitching issues, he would be a welcome addition. He was rated #2 LHP and #8 player in the state of Florida, according to Perfect Game. Somehow he slid all the way to the 16th round, hopefully because of a high bonus demand to forego his commitment to FIU.

Quote:
Allen, who signed a letter of intent with Florida International, was MLB.com’s No. 184 prospect entering the draft. He said he has not received a contract offer yet, but will make a decision in the coming weeks.

In 81 innings on the mound during his senior year, Allen struck out 150 batters and allowed just 29 hits and 11 walks. He threw a no-hitter in his final high school start, a Class 9A state semifinal victory over Miami Palmetto.

Allen added a .450 batting average with two home runs and 22 RBI at the plate.

“I know I’ll be fine whether I go play pro ball or go to FIU and try again in three years,” Allen said. “It’s been a dream of mine since I was 5 years old. It’s wild to me. Growing up, you just want to go to school and then take your shot at it. But the opportunity is here and now.”

Okay, 20 signees. 2 of the 22 signees you are referring to (Joshua Crouch and Altoon Coleman) are going to JUCO.

The ratings I believe you are referring to reflect the best ratings only from PG showcases those players have attended. Whether or not PG shows such a rating has no relevance on how good they are projected as players. Many of the highest level players for each school do not have a PG showcase rating. Even so, if you take a look at the rated players signed with other top ranked classes (#2 Florida, #4 Vanderbilt, even #15 Florida State) most of their players making it to campus are rated 10s. The fact those high rated players fell so far in the draft is likely because they have strong committments to their schools and required very high bonuses to get bought out of their commitments.

I am also not aware of any JUCO baseball signees for FIU and I've been following the PG recent commitments pretty consistently since Coach Melendez was hired (JUCO commitments show up as pre-2017 class commits). Some commits are missed by PG though.

I'm hoping for the best in this class. Getting players like Logan Allen and Christian Santana will be key to at least somewhat salvaging this class. I've read where Logan is considered to be a tough sign which is likely why he fell as far as he did.

Believe me. There are some JUCO signees already in place as well. I'm sure MM and staff knew they would lose the top players to the draft (out of the 29 unofficial), since that is what happens year in and year out with the programs that usually sign the player FIU just did for 2017 and being ranked #1 in the nation. Logan Allen is key signee, and for the same reasons Yandro stated. Let's see what happens.

Go Panthers!

LHP Dominic LoBrutto has signed with the Red Sox organization. Dominic was a junior and will forego his senior year to pursue his professional dreams.

Good luck, Dominic!

I think his younger brother is committed to FIU, also named Juan. He is a senior this year at Somerset Academy. This should be interesting if they are both on the team come spring 2019. If this is not his brother, what a strange coincidence.
