After several years of enrollment caps, program eliminations, and other belt-tightening measures, Florida International University is poised to shift gears when dealing with the ever-shrinking state funding out of Tallahassee:

Instead of cutting back to make ends meet, FIU will grow -- by a lot.

On Thursday morning, the FIU board of trustees unanimously approved a 5-year plan by FIU President Mark Rosenberg that calls for boosting enrollment by adding 2,000 students a year. In five years, FIU is expected to have nearly 53,000 students. Current enrollment is 42,287.

Rosenberg wants to continue to increase the number over the next decade with the goal of having FIU enroll more than 60,000 students.

``It's clear to us that there's going to be a growing demand for higher education in this country, and it's clear to us, given our demographics in Florida, that there is a growing demand for higher education here,'' Rosenberg told the Herald before Thursday's vote. ``We don't want to turn our backs on the students of this community.''

Rosenberg argues the larger student population will increase the public's access to higher education, and will also give FIU a stronger financial base of tuition-paying students to sustain academic programs.

Some faculty were intially concerned about the bold expansion plans, but adminstration promises to preserve academic quality appear to have set faculty members more at ease.
