According to this table in this article in a North Florida newspaper that ranks state universities and community colleges both public and private, FIU ended up with a bit over $40.5 million in charitable donations received during 2011, below UF, UM, USF, and FSU, in that order. I'm surprised FIU received more than twice what UCF did receive ($19.7 million), which came in at #6 in the state. FAU just got $ 7.8 million, good for 12th overall.

This is a critical area for the future of our university in providing enough assistance to get over the hump and improve both academically and athletically. We should all make an effort to assist our university financially, be it with extra donations to Panther Club or the FIU Foundation in general.

This is great news. While we still have a ways to go, it shows that our community is getting engaged with the school and giving back, which will only help us grow more.

Fanatic, any idea on what the year-to-year figures are?

No idea whatsoever, Jules, in terms of year to year figures, which should be more telling, I would agree. I just saw this article and found it interesting and relevant to our university. I think it should be noted that, while not making a ton of "public" news, that FIU is in the midst or about to start, a campaign to raise $750 million. Maybe that's a reason why our numbers are so good, or one of the reasons, I don't really know.

This is impressive.

YOu guys are right we ALL have to GIVE to FIU.

I got to know the president of the Penn State Alumni association is Southern Cal and she explained to me that they collect 5 bucks and info from everyone that come to football game watch parties

They then donate it to the school in each persons name because part of the formula US News and all those other national Higher Ed rankings use includes THE % of ALUMNI DONATING.

So give, even if its $10 a year. The formula doesnt live at care how much each person is giving just the percentage of total alums who donated in the last year.

Absolutely, we all need to give to the school. Beyond rankings, our continued contributions help our school's growth.
