Doing good the College of Law students, as FIU finished very narrowly in 2nd place to Stetson, out of 15 teams, which included LSU, UM, and Tulane: ... nationals/

MIAMI (March 12, 2012) – Fresh off their semi-final finishes in all-state competitions, FIU’s Trial Team took second place in the National regional rounds of the 2012 American Association for Justice (“AAJ”) Student Trial Advocacy Competition.

Trial Team veterans Ari Goldberg (3L), Amy Ruiz (3L), and Victoria Cueto (3L), along with talented newcomer Matthew Pierce (3L), went undefeated in three preliminary rounds and entered the semi-finals as the top-ranked and lone undefeated squad among the 15 teams competing in the Miami Region, including Tulane, Louisiana State, Miami, and Stetson.

In the Semi-Final Round, FIU won once more, remaining undefeated at 4-0 going into the Championship Round, which presented a rematch against the Stetson team they had defeated in the prelims. By the narrowest of margins, this time, Stetson prevailed, in a trial with performances so sterling that judges, students, faculty, family, and friends alike commented it was a shame that both schools — both 4-1 in the competition — could not be champs.

The AAJ team was coached by Professor Fingerhut, along with College of Law and FIU Trial Team alums Gisel Brito and David Williams (both Class of 2011), and the assistance of David Baroff (Class of 2009 and past AAJ regional champion).
