College Football List Week: The 5 Programs that are the Easiest to Dislike
College Football TheBigLead July 8th. 2009, 3:30pm

1. Notre Dame - The most storied team in college football history has its own channel, is usually loved by the media (after a one-year hiatus in 2008, that should resume this year) and recruiting gurus, and has the largest and most spread out fanbase in the country. If you don’t like the Irish, September-December is going to be brutal; they’re going to be very good.

2. Florida State - Free Shoes University always seems to be embroiled in one scandal or another (Coles, Warrick, Adrian McPherson, the current cheating scandal, etc). Arrogance due to success in the 80s and 90s permeates throughout the program (must be a Florida thing. See No. 5). When it comes to ancient coaches, it’s much easier to dislike Bobby Bowden than Joe Paterno.

3. Ohio State - 1) What’s the deal with emphasizing THE before Ohio State University? 2) Why not just admit referees gave you the 2003 National Championship against Miami? 3) Stomping through a weak league and then getting smoked in the National title game twice in a row didn’t help the image. 4) In the insufferable fans department, the Buckeyes are at or near the top.

4. USC - A newbie thanks to an incredible surge in the last decade. Most of the hatred toward the men of Troy is due strictly to success. (Before you hammer the grinning Pete Carroll, he’s actually easy to root for.) ESPN has helped create a monster - remember how the 2005 Trojans were on the cusp of being anointed one of the best teams of all-time … and then lost to underdog Vince Young and Texas in a classic Rose Bowl?

5. Miami Hurricanes - Five or six years ago and the ‘Canes might have topped this list, but losing leads to indifference, not hatred. As a Miami fan in the 80s and 90s before we went to college, we fully admit they were brash and insufferable. Frequenty. Their last few years of futility would have dropped them off the radar if not for this embarrassing melee against FIU in 2006. A few Hurricanes in the NFL (past and present) who would qualify as punks: Shockey, Ray Lewis, Willis McGahee, Winslow, Sapp and Michael Irvin.

The ACC has not been better than the Big 10 (11) and this year it is debatable if the Big East will be much better than the ACC. But I can see the hate, and they have been undeniably smoked in recent big games. Just hate to see the hometown team getting bashed.
